Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. Failure to clean is the leading factor in home dryer fires, per the U.S. Fire Administration. How lint catches fire, the warning signs, and prevention.

The short answer

Yes. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 clothes dryer fires in homes each year, and failure to clean was the leading factor in them, at about 34 percent (2008–2010 data). Lint is highly flammable, and a clogged vent traps both lint and heat. Cleaning the lint screen every load and the vent at least once a year removes most of that risk.

What the numbers say

The U.S. Fire Administration studied clothes dryer fires in residential buildings using 2008–2010 fire department reports. It found:

How a clogged vent leads to a fire

Lint is fine, dry fiber, and it burns easily. Every load leaves some behind, past the lint screen and inside the dryer, the hose and the duct.

When the vent is clear, hot air carries most of it outside. When the vent is partly blocked, air slows down, the dryer runs longer and hotter, and lint keeps building up near the heat. Safety parts are designed to cut the heat when it gets too hot, but a dryer running against a blocked vent is working at the edge of its limits, cycle after cycle.

Crushed hoses and plastic ducts add to the risk. A kink behind the dryer collects lint the same way a clog does, and a plastic duct can melt or burn through if lint inside it ignites. A metal duct is better at keeping a fire inside it.

Warning signs

What Arizona adds

In the low desert, a hot laundry room in July is normal, which makes a hot-running dryer easier to miss. Use drying time as your main signal instead.

Monsoon dust storms pack outside hoods. Birds nest in hoods in spring. In Flagstaff and Prescott, snow and ice can cover or freeze the flap in winter, the same season dryer fires peak nationally. In every case, the result is the same: air can't get out.

How to prevent it

Fire safety guidance from the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association comes down to a few habits:

More Answers

Is a gas dryer safer than an electric one?

Both can catch fire from lint. A gas dryer should also have its connection checked by a qualified gas professional. We don't do gas work, and we never disconnect gas lines.

How much does a cleaning cost?

A standard dryer vent cleaning is $79. Heavy clogs or long runs start at $129, and roof or second-floor vents at $199, priced before any extra work.

What should I do if I smell burning from the dryer?

Stop the dryer, unplug it if you can do so safely, and don't run it again until the vent and dryer have been checked. If you see smoke or flames, leave the house and call 911.

Is the 2,900 figure current?

It's the U.S. Fire Administration's estimate from its study of 2008–2010 fire department reports. The figures are older, but the leading cause, lint and failure to clean, has not changed.
